Reasons to Avoid

  • Very little 8K content available in the wild
  • Poor off-angle viewing

The R648 is a good TV. Thanks to the Mini-LED display, it can display bright whites & dark blacks. It has two HDMI 2.1 inputs, which is excellent if you have multiple 8K video sources. HDMI 2.1 inputs allow for 4K gaming at 120Hz. That's great!

The Mini-LED display allows this TV to have a slim profile, so it'll boost the aesthetic of your room & look sharp. It handles reflections well, so there are no issues there either. The TV's response rate is very fast, which might cause 60Hz content to stutter, but you can enable the Motion Interpolation feature if you experience this.

Overall the R648 is a great TV that we'd recommend to anyone.

The Editor’s Choice TCL 6-Series Roku TV (R635) is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a top-quality smart TV experience. With its mini-LED backlighting and great picture quality, the R635 offers an unbeatable value compared to other brands.

It supports 4k gaming from Xbox Series X & PS5 at 60FPS and 120FPS at 1080p. The input lag is negligible; you won't notice it. So this TV is ideal for gaming.

It has an excellent response time & image quality. We noticed that there could be some color washout based on your viewing angle. It isn't a dealbreaker but is worth mentioning. The best spot for this TV is in a room where you're looking directly at it.

Overall, we're really impressed by the Series 6 Roku TV. It's a fantastic TV for the price.

Physical Properties

Reasons to Buy

  • You find it on sale

Reasons to Avoid

  • The display could be brighter
  • Only 60Hz refresh rate

The price is the most notable feature of the TCL 5-Series (S535). You can get the 75" screen for about $1000 if it's not on sale. You get the same great color and brightness as QLED TVs, but for a fraction of the price. You can also consider the money saved by not buying a Roku Stick, but you could say that about any Roku TV.

The TCL 5-Series (S535) has a native refresh rate of 60Hz, the lowest refresh rate you can get. This TV is not ideal for playing video games, and you may even notice studdering when viewing fast-moving action scenes.

We also noticed that the display doesn't get very bright, a problem that gets worse when using Game Mode. We wouldn't recommend putting this TV in a well-lit room because of the brightness. In most games, you can adjust the brightness via Settings, but then you'd get washed-out colors. The same goes for any HDR content; this TV is not a frontrunner when it comes to lighting. The display does have excellent contrast, though. So you might be able to forgive the brightness of the display.

The S546 replaced the S535. The S546 doesn't come with Roku OS, though; it comes with Google TV. The software is comparable, though, so that's unlikely to be a deal-breaker.

When shopping for this TV, we'd advise you to check the prices of both the S535 & S546. We've seen the newer S546 on sale for a couple hundred cheaper than the older S535. Keep an eye out for clearance deals on the S535; it may soon be discontinued.

Entry-Level Roku TV

Physical Properties

Reasons to Buy

  • Excellent value-priced 4K

Reasons to Avoid

  • Lacks local dimming feature
  • Not many features
  • Display isn't very bright; not ideal for well-lit rooms

Honestly, this TV shouldn't be on any "Best TV" list. It has a basic set of features; expected from a TV in this price range.

The panel lacks local dimming, so despite its high contrast ratio, the darks aren't very dark. The 60Hz refresh rate is as low as refresh rates come, so expect some studdering in action scenes or video games. Perhaps the worst part about this TV is the display's brightness; it doesn't get very bright. You don't get what you'd expect out of HDR content.

Despite these issues, this TV is still a decent entry-level TV, given its price.

Roku TV Shopping Questions & Answers

  • What is Roku?

Roku is a digital media player. Originally, Roku was software built into a "streaming stick" that connects to a TV's HDMI port. Roku uses WiFi to stream content from various sources including streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu. The Roku software provides an easy to use interface to access hundreds of channels (streaming services). Today, the Roku software can be found built into Smart TVs as the Operating System.

  • Do I need a 4K TV?

You need a 4K TV if you have (or plan to have) a 4K video source such as a Blu-Ray Player or 4K gaming console. Many streaming services are also offering 4K content. These services include Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max & more.

  • What is an HDR TV?

HDR stands for "High Dynamic Range." HDR can significantly boost picture quality. You'll see more profound contrast, better highlights, & richer colors.

Not all HDR implementations are equal. Some TVs do it much better than others. A lot of the variation in quality depends on the TV's display panel. A dim display will not display HDR content as vivid as a Mini-LED display.

So having a TV that supports HDR is a good thing; but HDR alone doesn't make a good TV.
